The last semester at the Weyburn Comprehensive School as a Gr. 10-12 school began on Monday. This fall the school will welcome Grade 7, 8 and 9 students into the building and the staff is looking forward to establishing new ideas and programs as well as retaining some of the old traditions. It is an exciting time in launching this new phase of education in Weyburn even though there will be growing pains.
There are a number of important events are taking place this week.
A grad/parent meeting was held on Tuesday evening in the Cugnet Centre. Plans were presented about the school events that will be used to honour the graduating class of 2016. This will include the ceremonies and punch reception. Then the Chem-Free grad committee outlined their plans and asked for volunteers in helping them carry them off. Every grad and at least one parent was asked to attend.
On Thursday evening, Feb. 4, starting at 7, will be the first of the grade meetings for the new students coming into WCS in the fall. This week’s meeting will be for the present Grade 6’s. All Grade 6 students and parents intending to enroll at WCS this fall are invited to attend to learn about the plans, organization and expectations that are in place at the present time. The Grade 7 night will be on Monday, Feb. 8, and the Grade 8 night will be on Thursday, Feb. 11.
Everyone is also reminded of the “Pink Pancake Breakfast” to be held in the Colleen Weimer Hall on Tuesday, Feb. 9, from 7-9 a.m. Everyone is invited out for a wholesome breakfast to start the day and help raise money for Breast Cancer Awareness.
Also this week is the start of the 81st clash between Estevan and Weyburn in the McLeod Series. This basketball event is probably the longest running high school competition in the province and has a storied tradition. Having evolved into a four-game series, it is a competition where if one school wins three games they are declared the winner and if each school wins two games it is decided on points for. WCS lost the trophy last year after having won it every year since 1984.
Estevan had built up a huge lead in wins but now Weyburn is ahead. In by-gone years the two gyms were filled and it is hoped as many as possible come out to the Eagle gym next Wednesday, Feb. 10, with games starting at 5:30. The first games are today, Feb. 3, in Estevan.
This weekend the senior boys are hosting a tournament in the Eagle gym, the senior girls are in North Battleford and the junior boys in Stoughton. WCS wrestlers are at Regina O’Neil and on Saturday the Cheer and Pom squads are at a “Icebreaker” competition in Regina.
Next weekend the senior girls are in Indian Head and the senior boys in Swift Current for tournaments.
The following week is the spring break.
