The top hunters and fishermen in the Weyburn region were awarded for their efforts in 2018 at the Fred Garner Memorial Banquet and Trophy Night, held on Saturday evening at the Cugnet Centre.
The evening also served as a major fundraiser for the Wildlife Federation, with both a live and silent auction held through the evening along with several raffles.
The top award for the evening was the Fred Garner Memorial Award for the Outstanding Member of the Year, presented to Terrie Swanson.
He is involved in many aspects of the Wildlife Federation, including serving as an organizer of the group’s archery program, and helped to secure the organization’s new home, the South Weyburn Community Centre.
The fishing awards were presented as follows. For largest Northern Pike, Ted Siwy earned the award with a pike that weighed in at 22.58 pounds.
The best walleye was caught by Brian Furgason, weighing 8.19 pounds, and the largest walleye from Nickle Lake was by Ryan Englot, weighing 7.14 pounds. The award for perch went to Colton Tochor, weighing 1.93 pounds.
In the junior categories, the perch award went to Ashton Schenk, 1.82 pounds; the pike award went to Madden Furman, 9.12 pounds; and the walleye award went to Madison Knoll, 6.69 pounds.
For birds, the pheasant award went to Ted Siwy for a bird that measured 37 bars.
For whitetail deer, the award for best typical buck went to Nastalgia Moore, 154 4/8. The best junior whitetail buck, the Larry Jacobson Memorial Award, went to Everett Murray, 97 5/8.
For mule deer, the award for a typical buck went to Earl Stephenson with a measurement of 183 0/8, which is a Henry Kelsey qualifying typical mule deer.
The non-typical buck award went to Jeff Chinski, who had a measurement of 214 6/8, also a Henry Kelsey qualifying non-typical mule deer.
The award for a buck taken by archery went to Dustin Erixon, 172 3/8.
The award for antelope went to Jared Patterson, 75 0/8, a Henry Kelsey qualifying antelope.
The award for elk went to Terrie Swanson, 267 0/8, while the award for best moose went to Brent Olfert, 163 5/8.
The award for a black bear taken by rifle went to Leo Chinski, 15 14/16, and for a bear taken by archery, Ben Gill, 17 4/16.
There were three grand slam awards presented. Daron Johnson was awarded for taking a bull moose, bull elk and a whitetail buck; Leo Chinski was awarded for taking a cow elk, whitetail buck, mule deer doe and black bear; and Jeremy Murray was awarded for a whitetail buck, mule deer buck and a black bear.
The award for the best big game animal taken by a woman went to Nastalgia Moore for her typical whitetail buck, measuring 154 4/8.
The best overall big game animal taken by a muzzle-loader, the Doug Lanz Memorial Award, went to Jeff Chinski for a non-typical mule deer, measuring 214 6/8.
