The Weyburn Wor-Kin Shop Corp, in conjunction with the United Nations, has declared December 3 as International Day of Persons with Disabilities in Weyburn and surrounding areas.
This year's theme is 'Removing barriers to create an inclusive and accessible society for all.'
According to the United Nations, over one billion people (or 15% of the world's population) live with some form of disability. They are the 'world's largest minority' and often face barriers to participation in all aspects of society. They often do not have equal access to services or society in general. Evidence and experience shows that when barriers to their inclusion are removed and persons with disabilities are empowered to participate fully in societal life, their entire community benefits.
"In my role as Tatagwa Parks chair and with the advice of our board we are working on making our parks more accessible for persons who have a physical disability. With paving the walkway we are expanding the areas where people can go, with a wheelchair, with a walker, and with a cane. Access to parks increases the quality of life for all," stated Weyburn's Deputy Mayor Nancy Styles.
"This aligns with the goal of the Weyburn Wor-Kin Shop Corp. - to ensure that persons with disabilities are included and welcomed by our community," said Andria Brady, Executive Director of the Weyburn Wor-Kin Shop Corp. "We achieve this through both programming and employment within the community. Our agency promotes the removal of barriers and the empowerment of individuals to participate fully in our society. This is reflected in our Mission Statement 'to provide support services that will enhance the quality of life and promote independence and community inclusion for adults with developmental and intellectual disabilities'."
The Wor-Kin Shop will be hosting a series of presentations on Monday, December 3 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Travelodge in Weyburn. Guests will hear about the Wor-Kin Shop's client success, learn more about their programs and meet the people involved in providing such an invaluable service.
Refreshments will be provided. Anyone who wishes to attend the event can RSVP to Andria Brady at 842-3411 or to [email protected].
