Winners of the 2011 YouthBiz competition were announced recently. Prize moneys were awarded to students in southeast Saskatchewan for their efforts in describing their business ideas and developing business plans. This year, 170 students registered to compete in this innovative business contest. YouthBiz is an initiative coordinated by Community Futures Sunrise.
In the Grade 10 to 12 category, first place and a $500 prize went to Tyler Kerr of Weyburn for his venture Kerr's Gym. Second place and $300 was awarded to Courtney Knibbs of Stoughton for her bakery business, Sweet Tooth. Third place and $150 went to Lyndon Lumb of Weyburn for his business Winding Road Outdoor Living, a company that sells supplies to outdoor enthusiasts.
In the Grade 6 to 9 category, first place and a $500 prize was awarded to Paige Kuntz of Macoun for her candy shop idea, Jumping Jelli Beans. Second place and $300 went to Morgan Sidloski and Tylan Charlton of Weyburn for their business MT Pet Photography. Third place and $150 was awarded to Malea Andrist of Macoun for her bakery idea, Chip Chocolate.
Special Achievement Awards were also given to students whose entries displayed outstanding qualities in their submission materials. Kane Altwasser from Yellow Grass receieved an award for Financial Detail and Research. Altwasser thoroughly listed both costs and suppliers for his snowboard store, Prairie Boarding Shop.
