The Bienfait Coalers exacted a bit of revenge against the Wawota Flyers at Bienfait Memorial Arena last Friday.
The Coalers beat the Flyers 5-2, marking their first victory over the defending Big Six Hockey League champions since Game 2 of the championship series last March. The Flyers won the only other match between the two clubs this season at the Wawota Community Forum on Dec. 23.
The Coalers (12-2-1) got goals from Riley Tetreault, Dylan Lay, Blaine Herzberg, Dylan Herzberg and Payden Benning with Landon Audet earning the win between the pipes. Riley Riddell and Lucas Hislop replied for the Flyers, while Guillaume Blouin took the loss in net.
The Flyers (10-5-1) got back into the win column two days later earning a 4-2 victory at home over the Carnduff Red Devils. Flyers' Ryan Taylor had a strong night offensively notching two third period goals and a second period assist.
The loss coupled with a 3-1 defeat to the Redvers Rockets (9-5) at the Carnduff Fast Trucking Centennial Arena on Jan. 13 dropped the Red Devils (9-6-1) into third place in the standings two points behind the second place Flyers.
The Oxbow Huskies (7-8) seem to be heading in the opposite direction of the Red Devils winning their third game in four tries since the league returned to action after the Christmas break. The Huskies came back from a 1-0 deficit with three third period markers to earn a 3-1 win over the Carlyle Cougars (2-13) at Carlyle Sports Arena on Friday. Huskie Brycen Odgers picked up two goals and an assist in the game, while his teammate Brody Haygarth notched three helpers.
A four-goal third period powered the Huskies to a 5-3 win over the Midale Mustangs (4-9-1) at the Midale Harry O. Memorial Arena the next evening. Huskies player Craig Cameron scored one goal and assisted on three others in the victory.
The Coalers hit the road this weekend with stops against the Mustangs on Friday and the Red Devils on Saturday. The Mustangs travel to Carlyle for a game against the Cougars one day after facing the Coalers.
The Cougars start the weekend with a home game against the Yellow Grass Wheat Kings (7-4-4) on Friday. Two days later, the Wheat Kings entertain the Flyers at the Yellow Grass Communiplex. The Flyers also see their first weekend action on Friday when they welcome the Rockets to Wawota.
