With ten games left in the regular season, the Red Wings still have a demanding first-place lead in the Viterra division of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL).
There is also plenty of regular season left for the Red Wings to catch up to the Battlefords North Stars, who are currently leading the league. Both the Red Wings and Melfort Mustangs are in second place, only trailing the North Stars by five points.
In the last week, the Red Wings were on the road, facing a few different teams.
They were in La Ronge on January 27, where they claimed a 3-1 decision over the La Ronge Ice Wolves.
Braden Mellon opened up scoring in the first period for the Red Wings, with assists going to Drake Glover and Aidan Teilborg.
Then in the second period, Jacob Jeske notched a goal, extending the Red Wings’ lead. He was assisted by Mike Eskra and Elvis Jansons.
During a powerplay in the third period, the Ice Wolves finally got on the board. Later in the game, they pulled their goaltender for an extra man on the ice, but the Red Wings were able to take advantage and Jacob Wozney scored an unassisted goal into their empty net for the win.
Carter Phair was in net for the win, and he stopped 30 out of 31 attempts.
During a Friday night game in Flin Flon, the Red Wings won a close 4-3 decision over the Bombers.
Weyburn started the game with a 2-1 lead in the first period. Scoring goals for Weyburn was Ian Parker and a powerplay goal by Aidan Teilborg.
Then in the second period, two more goals were notched by Weyburn, with the goals going to Braden Melon, and the second goal of the night for Teilborg.
The Bombers were able to catch some steam in the third period, scoring two goals. But they were unable to tie up the game.
Jack Burgart was in net for Weyburn, and he stopped 25 out of 28 shots.
Finishing off the weekend, the Red Wings were in Melfort where they dropped a 5-3 decision to the Mustangs.
In the first period, the Red Wings claimed an early 2-1 lead. Aidan Teilborg opened scoring during a powerplay, with Drake Glover notching the second goal of the period.
Melfort was able to tie up the game after scoring in the second period.
Then in the third period, the Mustangs claimed the lead after scoring three goals, while only Elvis Jansons was able to add to the Red Wings score.
Carter Phair was in net for the lost, and he stopped 36 out of 40 attempts.
The Red Wings have a busy weekend ahead of them, as they play against Notre Dame at Crescent Point Place on Friday, Feb. 5 at 7:30 p.m.
Then the annual Sportsman Dinner will be held on Saturday, Feb. 6. The expectation is for this year’s event to be the biggest and best ever.
The Sportsman Dinner will be held in a new venue at the Cugnet Centre. Myrna McFadden will be providing a gourmet meal for the evening.
Headlining the event will be Paul Coffey, who is a Hall Of Fame NHL defenseman. Co-headlining the event is Gregg Zaun, the Manalyst.
Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and the supper starts at 7:30 p.m. A program featuring the headliners will follow the supper.
Also, there will be silent and live auctions available, which will feature sports memorabilia, NHL game tickets, a Northern fishing trip and much more.
