ESTEVAN - The Estevan U13 A Bruins have advanced to the south final in the Hockey Saskatchewan provincial tournament.
The Bruins defeated Swift Current in two straight games in the south semifinal series. Estevan scored three times in the third period to take Game 1 3-2 on Feb. 18 in Estevan, and then wrapped up the showdown with a 4-2 win in Swift Current on Feb. 26.
Swift Current led 1-0 after two periods in Game 1, but then Maverick Tessier, Hugh Ross and Levi Garagan scored in an 8 1/2-minute span of the third period to put Estevan ahead 3-1. Swift Current scored once before the game was out.
Swift Current again held a 1-0 lead after the first period of Game 2, but Estevan seized the lead with three goals in four minutes. Parker Zohner had one goal and Preston Kuntz scored twice in the offensive surge. Kuntz’s second goal came 92 seconds after Swift Current had tied the game.
Tessier rounded out the scoring late in the third.
Joseph Hozjan was in goal for both games.
The Bruins will play Yorkton in the next round. Game 1 will be March 11 in Yorkton and Game 2 will be two nights later in Estevan, starting at 7:30 p.m.
