Exhibition match to feature local youth

Two young local fighters have been added to the April 13 fight card for 'The Rising'. Two nine-year-old boys from Weyburn will participate in an exhibition fight event at Crescent Point Place as a way of introducing people of all ages to Brazilian Jujitsu and mixed martial arts. MMA is of particular interest to young people, which could be a reason that MMA is currently the fastest-growing sport in the world.

"We feel it is very important to build and maintain relationships with the communities where we host events," said Cord Crowthers of Prestige Fight Club MMA. "It is one of our mandates that always comes to the forefront while working within a community."

Prestige works with local martial arts gyms, coaches and parents.

"We can help to build a strong following with our kids to introduce them to MMA," noted Crowthers. "Prestige Fight Club MMA is very proud to have teamed up with Weyburn MMA, to feature an introduction to MMA for kids."

Zachary 'The Flash' Olson, who attends Haig School, and Ryder 'Lights Out' Backlun, who attends Yellow Grass School, will represent the young local talent amid Weyburn's MMA community.

This exhibition match will not have the same contact that a regular match has, but rather just a supervised introduction to the sport for kids.

Nonetheless, the young athletes will be treated just like their adult counter parts for the evening's action. They will each take part in weigh ins, walk-in music, press conferences and competing in front of thousands in the cage at the live, televised event.

Tickets are $20 for kids and $40 for adults and are available at Olympia Fitness, the Red Wings office or at Fitzgerald's.
