Gold Wings soar to nationals in Ontario

The Weyburn Southern Range Gold Wings captured the Esso West Regional over the Pembina Valley Hawks over the weekend and will continue on to the Esso Cup in Stoney Creek, Ontario April 20-26.

The Weyburn Southern Range Gold Wings captured the Esso West Regional over the Pembina Valley Hawks over the weekend and will continue on to the Esso Cup in Stoney Creek, Ontario April 20-26.

Playing host to the Pembina Valley Hawks, the Gold Wings suffered a loss in the first game on Friday night, but battled back to win two in a row and take the series with a 3-0 win in Game 3.

The Gold Wings jumped out to a 2-0 first period lead and never looked back.

Cassidy Pirlot opened the scoring with a shorthanded marker. Tessa Wilson scored her first of two goals converting a 2 on 1 play.

Wilson scored her second goal as she converted a rebound in the second period. Weyburn outshot Pembina Valley 34-28.

Jane Kish was strong in net with her biggest save in the second period turning away Lauryn Keen on a breakaway.

The three game series started Friday night at Crescent Point Place. The Hawks took that game by a final of 3-2, putting the pressure on the Gold Wings. They didn't back down though, coming out in game two with a 4-1 win.

This is the first time that the Gold Wings will be heading to the Esso Cup and they will play the first game of the tournament against the winner of the Ontario Women's Hockey Association. The league champion will be determined on Sunday, April 13.

The other four teams are The Moncton Rockets representing the Atlantic region, THE BCFMAAAL champions Fraser Valley Phantom, the AMMFHL Champions Edmonton Thunder and the host team, Stoney Creek Sabres.
