Weyburn's own Derrick Pouliot, who was recently picked by the NHL Pittsburgh Penguins, threw out the first pitch at the Beavers game on June 26.

Weyburn's Mayor Debra Button recently congratulated Weyburn native Derrick Pouliot who was selected in the first round of the 2012 NHL Draft.

"Hockey is a great tradition in Weyburn. It's a tradition that has added a few names to NHL rosters, Larry Giroux, Rene Chapdelaine and Dave 'Tiger' Williams, just to name a few. Today, we add one more name to our list of hockey champions - Derrick Pouliot," said Mayor Button on June 25.

Pouliot, a defenseman who has played the last two seasons with the WHL Portland Winterhawks, was selected eighth overall by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the first round of the 2012 National Hockey League Entry Draft Friday. Pouliot also represented Canada West in the 2011 U17 World Hockey Challenge.

"You can't help but feel proud and honoured to think about how our community, our Weyburn hockey spirit helped prepare players like Derrick for hockey greatness," Button said.
