There was certainly no shortage of goals for the Estevan Sherritt Coal Bruins and Weyburn Wings on Saturday.
In the regular season finale for both peewee AA teams in Weyburn, the Wings outscored the Bruins 9-7 on the strength of three goals in the third period.
The Bruins (5-12-3) finished in fourth place in the South Saskatchewan Minor Hockey League, while Weyburn (16-2-2) took second.
The Bruins will play the fifth-place Moose Jaw Warriors (5-13-2) in the first round of the playoffs. The opener of the best-of-three series goes Saturday at 4:45 p.m. at Affinity Place. No further dates had been set as of press time.
The Wings got off to a booming start, scoring the first four goals of the game courtesy of Ethan Ernst (2), Dawsen Parker and Nolan Renwick, while getting another from Cordell Larson later in the period.
Estevan rebounded before the end of the period though, getting two goals from Dawson Schaff and one from Colby Himmelspeck to cut the Weyburn lead to 5-3.
The Bruins came back to tie the game early in the second period on goals from Kersey Reich and Mason Strutt.
Weyburn regained the lead late in the period on a Braden Birnie marker, but Schaff got it back with a hat trick goal with 56 seconds to play.
With the teams deadlocked at six entering the third, the Wings scored three straight goals to take control for good, as Ernst, Larson and Adam Herold found the back of the net.
Brennen Stubel closed out the scoring for Estevan with less than two minutes to play.
Weyburn went 4-for-8 on the power play, along with a shorthanded marker, while the Bruins were 2-for-6.
Goalies Bryson Garton and Justin Hertes both saw time between the pipes for the Bruins.
