Registrations are starting to come in for the annual Coal Country Run Walk.

This year’s run-walk will take place on May 13, with Rotary Park inside the Woodlawn Regional Park serving as the start-finish line. A half-marathon relay, which is 21.1 kilometres, will start at 9 a.m. The five-kilometre and the 10-kilometre run-walk will begin at 10 a.m.

The children’s mini-mile will start at approximately 11:30 a.m.

“We like to wait until all of the other participants are in, so they can watch the kids and cheer them on,” said Debby Knight, who organizes the event along with Peggy Rohatyn.

Awards will be handed out once the mini-mile is finished.

Knight said they already have 34 people signed up for the five-kilometre run walk, and 24 for the 10-kilometre jaunt.

They also have two teams signed up for the 21.1-kilometre half-marathon relay.

Early bird pricing ends on April 15. It’s also the deadline to get a free participants T-shirt.

“I’m thinking in the next week-and-a-half, we’re going to have lots more come in,” said Knight.

They haven’t received any registrations for the mini-mile. Knight said they have been promoting the mini mile in the schools, and the children have a lot of fun in the event each year, and the registration fee is only $15.

The registration deadline is at 9 a.m. on May 13, but Knight hopes people will sign up well in advance.

They are also in need of volunteers who can help out on the course.

A wellness expo will be set up inside of Rotary Hall during the day of the event. Anyone with a wellness-based business or concept can set up a table, and the expo is free to attend.

And a new timing system has been purchased and is on its way. Knight hopes it arrives soon so that it can be tested well before the event.

For the first time, a pasta supper will be served at the TS&M Woodlawn Golf Club on May 12 at 6 p.m. Tickets are $20 each. People don’t need to participate in the Coal Country activities to buy tickets for the supper. It will also be an opportunity for participants to pick up their race packages.

Encompass Fitness owner Brady Johnson will be a motivational speaker for the supper.

Registration packages can be picked up by 9:15 a.m. on race day.

Proceeds from this year’s event will be directed towards Fresh Air Fitness, which is the outdoor exercise area that Knight and Rohatyn are working to bring to Woodlawn Regional Park.
