The Weyburn Red Wings took their game on the road last week for three games in Melfort, La Ronge and Flin Flon.
Their road trip started off with a 3-2 win over the Melfort Mustangs on Wednesday, October 9. Scoring for the Wings started in the second period with Josh Lees banking the first two goals, with assists to Jacob Jeske, Nathan Morris, Kyle Olenuik and Sam Williams. The third goad came from Logan Herchak from Shain Sehshcuk and Morris.
"We gave up a two goal lead early on but came back and won," said coach Bryce Thoma.
The Ice Wolves took a bite out of the Wings on Thursday, October 10, where they took an 8-4 loss.
The Wings looked good in the first period. Morris started the scoring off with assists to Brian Farkus and Scheshcuk, his second goal coming shortly after from Ryan Cooper and Jacob Jeske. Sam Williams potted the third goal from Nick Pouliot and Olenuik.
The score was 3-1 for the Wings going into the second period. The Wings failed to stop four LaRonge goals.
"We played well but allowed three goals against in the third," said Thoma.
Colten Laroque scored the Wings fourth and final goal of the game, while the Wolves continued to put three more goals past the goalie.
Coming off the 8-4 loss, the Wings met the Flin Flon Bombers on Friday, October 11. Jon Brumwell scored the only goal in the game in the third period. The Wings fell 4-1.
"We out chanced them, but they scored on every opportunity," he said.
The Wings are now at 24 players with seven defence, two goalies and 15 forwards. The Wings traded Austin Rosselin to the Estevan Bruins for future considerations on October 3.
"We wanted to give Austin the chance to continue his junior A career and the Bruins coach used to coach him," said Thoma.
Morris earned the SJHL Rookie of the Week this past week. Morris, from Arvada, CO., is a 19-year-old rookie who is making an impact with the Red Wings in their rebuilding effort. Morris contributing two goals and two assists in two games played and picking up two assists on Wednesday night in Melfort and then scoring a pair of goals the following night in La Ronge. It was the first four points for Morris this season over the course of eight games played.
Next action for the Wings is tonight at Crescent Point Place where they host the Bombers. Puck drops at 7:30.
