Two losses this weekend moved the Weyburn Red Wings to the bottom of the SJHL standings in the early going of the new 2012-13 season.
The Red Wings were blown out 7-2 in their home opener Friday night against the visiting Yorkton Terriers, and they lost again on Saturday in Estevan, 5-1, to the Bruins.
On Friday night at Crescent Point Place, the Terriers got off to a quick first period lead, scoring three goals in the opening period. Tayler Thompson kicked off the scoring 13:49 into the frame. Three minutes later, Kamsack native Kailum Gervais scored a power play goal, before Jeremy Johnson extended the lead to 3-0.
Things would get uglier for the Red Wings in the second period. Thompson scored his second tally of the game on the power play at the 3:54 mark of the period, putting the Terriers up 4-0. Later on in the period, Jeremy Johnson and Dylan Johnson, brothers from Yorkton, added two more goals to put the Terriers up 6-0 and put the game out of reach heading into the final period.
The Red Wings scored two goals in the third period from Tyler Borstmayer and Ryan Whitell, but it was much too late. Despite outshooting the Terriers 35-26, it was a difficult outing for the Red Wings starting goaltender, Brett Teskey. He allowed six goals on 17 shots and was pulled after two periods. Yorkton netkeeper Conor Berrie saved 33 of the 35 shots he faced in the victory.
The Red Wings were one-for-four on the power play in the game, but struggled on the penalty kill, going three-for-seven when a man down.
On Saturday the Red Wings were down Highway 39 in Estevan to face their rivals, the Bruins. Estevan opened the scoring with a power play marker from Tanner Froese 2:28 into the game, putting the Bruins up 1-0. The Red Wings knotted it up later in the frame, with Lane Harbour's first goal of the season. The Wings didn't hold on long, however. Wyatt Garagan put the Bruins up 2-1 before the end of the period. The Bruins outshot the Wings in the period 15-7.
In the second frame a pair of goals from Hudson Morrison would put the Bruins up 4-1 heading into the third. The Bruins added one more goal by Nick Weiss in the third period and won the game 5-1.
The Bruins outshot the Red Wings 37-23 in the contest. Nicholas Clarke got the start for the Red Wings and turned away 32 shots.
The Red Wings continued to struggle killing penalties, allowing two power play goals. They also went 0 for 3 on the power play. After the weekend games, the Red Wings record fell to 2-5. It puts the Red Wings into a three-way tie with the Notre Dame Hounds and the Battleford North Stars for last place in the SJHL.
The Wings hosted the Melville Millionaires last night, but results weren't available at press time.
The Red Wings will play three road games over the coming weekend. They are in Nipawin on Friday night, Oct. 12, where they will play the Hawks at 7:30 p.m.
Saturday they are in Melfort for a 7:30 p.m. start, and on Sunday, Oct. 14, they are in Kindersley to meet the Klippers. Game time is at 6 p.m.
