ESTEVAN - Ryan Stovin has taken the lead after the first round of the men’s division at the Frametech Classic at the TS&M Woodlawn Golf Course.

Stovin shot a 2-under-par 70 Saturday to lead Chase Gedak and Logan Chernoff by a stroke. Ryan Chernoff and Anthony Melle sit two back at even par.

Stovin birdied the third, sixth and ninth holes to sit at 3-under through nine, and after a couple of bogeys on the back nine, he birdied 18 to end the first round on a high note.

Seventy-nine golfers are entered in the men’s event.

In the senior men’s division, Rick Hallberg of Weyburn and Scott Blackstock of Estevan are tied at even par 72. Pat Murphy and James Gordon are four strokes back after shooting a 76.

Hallberg won both the provincial senior men’s and the mid-master’s men’s competitions earlier this week at Woodlawn.

Thirty golfers are entered in senior men’s.

In the women’s division, Paige Wheeler has the lead after shooting an 87. She has a five-stroke advantage on Donna Reiger. Maxine Starkewski and Angel Erickson are seven shots back of Wheeler.

Eleven golfers are in the women’s division.

For the first time, a longest drive contest, sponsored by Fast Hands, is happening Saturday afternoon at the golf course.

Play will resume Sunday. The women’s event champion will be crowned, since it is a two-round event. The men’s and senior men’s are three rounds.

One of the highlights of the tournament, the annual Dave Price Memorial Horse Race, will be Sunday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. The 12 golfers in the championship flight from the men’s event will participate in a nine-hole competition. Two golfers will be eliminated on each of the first two holes, and then one golfer will be knocked out on each subsequent hole.

The horse race traditionally attracts a large number of spectators, who will line the fairways of the course to watch.

SASKTODAY.ca will have coverage of the classic throughout the weekend.
