A pair of bantam teams with the Estevan Sharks water polo program played on the weekend, bringing back impressive results to Estevan.
The Estevan Sharks bantam (U14) boys hit the water this weekend with their first tournament of the year with two teams, the Tiger Sharks and the Reef Sharks. Eleven boys made the trip up to the Lawson Centre in Regina on Sunday, coming out strong.
The Reef Sharks played first and came away with commanding lead against the Weyburn Hurricanes in an 8-2 win. The Reef Sharks unfortunately did not have any spare players this weekend and so by the second game they started to tire out and could not pull off a win against the Regina Dreadnoughts, losing 7-3. In their third game they played well with a good passing and teamwork put lost once again to the Regina Tugboats 8-5.
The Tiger Sharks defeated the Dreadnoughts 5-2 and they were then matched up against the Tugboats and struggled in the first half of the game but in the second half they came back and won the game 6-5. In their third match up of the night they played the Regina Battleship Team and dominated in the water with Tristan Threinen and Logan Dalziel playing off of each other’s strengths and scoring many of the goals and winning 9-1.
The final game of the night was supposed to see the Reef Sharks take on the Tiger Sharks, but there was a water contamination issue and the pool had to be evacuated which meant the tournament ended an hour early. Coaches Dave Dzeryk and Jason Dalziel were very happy with the weekend’s results and look forward to the next bantam tournament on Nov. 4, once again in Regina.
Given their relative inexperience at the level, the bantam girls team faced some tough competition at U14 bantam tournament this weekend. The first game of the season started out slow for the Sharks. Jordyn Tarnes scored the team’s first four goals to get them back in the game followed by a couple more by Sadie Smith assisted by Tayla Gervais to tie it up before losing in the final seconds 7-6 to the Regina Armada Submarine. The next game had the girls fighting hard and despite goalie Lily Knoll playing well and stopping a lot of shots, the girls lost 8-0 to the Regina Armada Destroyer.
The third game was a close loss at 10-8 to the Regina Armada Cruisers with Emily Sauder, and Jordyn and Emily Tarnes leading in goals scored. The final game was a hard fought rematch against the Destroyer team that the Sharks had lost 8-0. The girls played a great defence including Alandra Young, who had a few shots on goal. Emily Sauder got it past their goalie twice and Emily Tarnes scored one to make the final score 8-3.
