The Carlyle Skating Club hosted their annual skating carnival on Sunday, March 22. This year’s theme was “So You Think You Can Skate?” modelled after the popular television show “So You Think You Can Dance?”
Coaches Dawn Dyer, Katy Soroka, and Grace Smyth were excited for their students to showcase their skills as CanSkaters and the STARSkaters demonstrated their abilities in their solo routines, as well as in group performances.
Program Assistants Anna Doty, Halle Doty, Kyla Fischer, Jessica Moffat, Brittany Rowe, Katie Rowley, Halle Schutz, Payton Spry, Mackenzie Valentine, and Tarris Valentine were also pleased to see the youth they had been helping all season step on the ice to perform.
The afternoon of skating was opened up by “O’Canada” performed by Katie Wilson, with Hayden Miller and Riley Penney skating the Canadian and Saskatchewan flags around the rink.
STARSkate solos then began with Halle Schutz, Payton Spry, and Tiana Delalleau each demonstrating their abilities on the ice. Other solos were strewn throughout the program with Ciara Corrigan, Tarris Valentine, Anna Doty, Katie Rowley, Jessica Moffat, Kyla Fischer, Mackenzie Valentine, Halle Doty, Jessica Szakacs, Nikki Lamb, Victoria Flynn, Brittany Rowe, and Grace Smyth all performing throughout the afternoon.
This group also performed together as a group to “Celebrate,” which had a lot of energy and was very entertaining. Additionally the Jr. STARSkaters performed “Shake it off” and the Sr. STARSkate group performed to “Uptown Funk.”
This year’s STARSkate award went to Jessica Moffat for her efforts in the rink.
While STARSkater, Halle Doty, earned the Excellence in Artistry Award for her efforts this year.
Four CanSkate groups performed at the carnival with Drazmine Palma, Rommy Garcia, Rory Miller, Tenley Gervais, and Thea Marzan skating to “Locomotion” assisted by Halle Schutz, Kyla Fischer, and Grace Smyth.
The second group of Alanna Penney, Alix Rae, Dannie Eaton, Nevaeh Sweet, and Tori Wilson performed to “Happy” and were helped on the ice by Anna Doty, Katie Rowley, and Payton Spry.
Flint Coffey, Kayden Holonics, Brody Knelsen, David Kostal, Myles Lequyer, Nixon McArthur, Kirk Rutten, and Isaah Smith skated to “Another One Bites the Dust,” assisted by Brittany Rowe, Jessica Moffat, and Tarris Valentine.
The final CanSkate group skated to “Footloose” as Ciara Corrigan, Katelyn Desjarlais, Katelyn Rutten and Makenna Slykhuis took to the ice with assistance from Halle Doty and Mackenzie Valentine.
This year’s CanSkate award went to Katelyn Desjarlais, with Myles Lequyer and Alix Rae also receiving awards in the CanSkate category.
The award for Program Assistant this year went to Kyla Fischer.
Every year the Carlyle Figure Skating Club brings in a guest skater and this year Nicki Nagy of Melville, a Provincial Pre-Novice Champion and 2015 Canada Games competitor, took to the ice to perform.
The rink was packed and it was overall a wonderful day for families to enjoy together.
