The World Sub-Junior/Junior Powerlifting Championships will be held in Regina from August 26-31.Saskatchewan will have six athletes participating in the event with three hailing from Weyburn.
“We are excited to host an international event like this, with the best young and up-and-coming lifters in the world,” said Ryan Fowler, co-chair of the Organizing Committee. “We know it means so much to the Canadian, and especially the Saskatchewan athletes, to lift at home.”
Weyburn lifters Natalie Hastings and Mikayla Lohse will compete on Thursday, August 29 at 5 p.m., and Brianna Swyryda will compete on Friday, Aug. 30 at 12 p.m.
This will be Hastings and Swyryda’s first look at international competition, while Lohse has a bit more experience going into her second international event.
The public is encouraged to get out and support local and provincial athletes. There are two sessions each day – Monday through Friday the first session starts at noon and the second at 5 p.m. On Saturday, there is only one session at noon.
Admission is $5 a day or $20 for a week pass. All lifting will be held at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel and Conference Centre at 1975 Broad St, Regina.
The organizing committee is appreciative of the support the community and province has given for this event. They are expecting 160 athletes from 30 countries to attend this championship. The organizing committee is confident that the athletes, fans and visitors will experience a first-class event.
