On May 30, members of the Weyburn Wildlife Federation released 286 hen pheasants in suitable habitat south of Weyburn. Hen pheasants were released rather than roosters in hopes that they would help increase the populations by producing hatching eggs in the wild. Two thousand birds were delivered from the Canadian Pheasant Company in Brooks with 1700 going to the Estevan Wildlife Federation and the Souris Moose Mountain Wildlife Federation.
The Weyburn Wildlife Federation agreed to purchase the remaining birds to make up a full shipment of 2000 required for delivery. Cost of the birds was $11/bird delivered and all birds were released by members of the Wildlife Federation. This project was funded through the continued support of Weyburn and surrounding area and participation at the annual awards night in March. It is hoped that the release of these pheasants into the wild will increase populations and provide Saskatchewan hunters an opportunity to hunt these birds.
