Wine and paint nights are becoming all the rage for adults.
You go to the host location. All your art supplies are there for you, and an instructor takes you through the steps of creating a masterpiece as you sip wine and munch on appetizers. It’s a fun and relaxing way to spend an evening creating with your friends.
The idea is also a simple one to carry out as a family or as a kid get together. If you’re not comfortable leading the art activity yourself, I would highly recommend choosing a tutorial from Art for Kids Hub on YouTube.
The instructor is a super cool dad who does art tutorials with each of his kids in a wide range of skill levels. They are well produced, entertaining and easy to follow in real time. Most of their art lessons are using black Sharpies to draw, and then colouring with either crayon, pencil crayon or markers, but he does offer the odd painting lesson as well.
The set up would be simple, as you’d only need the art tools mentioned above, plus some paper, and I’d recommend cardstock paper so that the marker doesn’t bleed through. Get everyone around the table with their supplies and play the video on an iPad or stream to the nearest T.V.
In between drawing you could make and drink milkshakes or put out a small sundae bar.
It sounds like a super simple idea, and it is. I think I often underestimate the impact of just spending time with our kids doing simple things that they enjoy. I typically plan a lot of things that are pretty creative and that I think the family will love, and they do, but I’d venture that they love the simple things just as much.
At times I can let the “daunting” task of planning hold me back from the act of doing, and that’s something that needs to stop happening. Simple is good. Undistracted time together is good. Just get it in the schedule and just do it. It’ll be worth it.
