Team Canada won the 2016 Spengler Cup, beating HC Lugano of Switzerland 5-2 in the final. Canada finished the round robin with a 1-1 record, and then won the games in the quarterfinal and the semifinal rounds. The last time Canada repeated as champions was 2002 and 2003. Team Canada will look to defend that championship at the next tournament in Davos, Switzerland, at the end of 2017.
In the NHL, the Ottawa Senators lost to the Washington Capitals 2-1 in a close game on New Year’s Day. The Senators are in second place in the Atlantic Division.
As for the Western Hockey League, the Regina Pats swept the home and home with the Prince Albert Raiders over the weekend. The Pats are in first place in the East Division.
In the Ontario Hockey League, the Windsor Spitfires beat the Flint Fire Birds 4-2 in a close game. The Spitfires are in fourth place in the Western Conference.
In the American Hockey League, the Ontario Reign won a home and home with the Stockton Heat over the weekend. The Reign are in first place in the Pacific Division.
The New England Patriots beat the Miami Dolphins 35-14 in a one sided game in the final weekend of the NFL season. The Pats finished the regular season with a 14-2 record and they will have home field advantage in the playoffs.
Other scores from week 17 were: the Green Bay Packers edged the Detroit Lions 31-24, the Minnesota Vikings beat the Chicago Bears 38-10 and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers edged the Carolina Panthers 17-10.
In the NBA, the Cleveland Cavaliers beat the Charlotte Hornets 121-109 in a one sided game. The Cavs are in first place in the Eastern Conference.
In NCAA Basketball, the No. 24 Florida Gators beat the Arkansas Razorbacks 81-72 in a close game. The Gators are in second place in the South Eastern Conference.
