I’m so glad I was born in the technical age. I know technology can get a bad rap at times but I really do love it.
I love looking through old photo albums and always wish there were more pictures of my parents and grandparents. It thrills me that when my kids look back at their childhood in photos they will have access to almost daily photographs.
Because I’m a photographer and have a high value on documenting our days, I wanted to share a few ways I keep on top of it all – or attempt to.
My first goal is to take the pictures and to take them of the small things in our days. Sometimes I think, “I just want to remember how little her hand was gripping that pencil,” so I’ll take that shot. Or I’ve been known to verge on “smother mother” status by taking pictures of my kids sleeping.
Because all of our family lives far away, I do post my pictures on social media, specifically Instagram. The other reason I love Instagram is that it makes it easy to organize my pictures by hashtags and then create books from those hashtags.
Any homeschooling pictures are found under #willmsgrovelementary. Vacation pictures have #willmsinflorida. It is important to commit to printing your pictures. Who knows if we’ll have flash drives in the future.
Companies such as Chatbooks allow you to search your pictures by hashtag, and they’ll load them all into a book and you just press order. It literally takes five minutes.
The other thing I’m trying to get better at doing is investing in having professional family sessions done. I can take great pictures of my kids, but I can’t take them of me with my kids. Recently a friend and local photog did a documentary session of our family. It was at home, unposed, doing the things we love.
The photos are brilliant and I know I will treasure them always. There are so many great photogs in this area, go out and book yourself a session so that your kids can look back and see you too.
