I love a good comedy night. We’ve enjoyed time spent at clubs like Yuk Yuks in Saskatoon, having dinner and laughing at a comedian’s performance.
Comedy clubs are not typically somewhere you can take or would want to take children, but who doesn’t love to laugh?
Because laughter is wonderful medicine, I love the idea of having a family comedy night. Considering that we likely can’t hire a comedian to come for a private performance, we’re going to have to get creative as to what a comedy night will look like.
A simple Google search will result in numerous child comedians that you can check out. A word of caution, as a parent of young children, I would always screen the material to make sure you find it appropriate for your own family.
I think child comedians are a fun way to introduce kids to what a stand-up comic performance looks like. If you’re looking for a more seasoned comedian, I would recommend Jim Gaffigan, who has his own Netflix specials, as he’s a really clean comedian who uses family life for a lot of his content.
Just because we want to laugh doesn’t mean we need to watch a comic. One of our family’s fun past times is watching Fail Army or other “fail” type videos. Maybe we shouldn’t find cats falling off of things super funny, but we totally do. Another word of caution, screen these as well because they don’t always edit out rough language.
America’s Funniest Home Videos are also a big hit with the kids, and due to their prime time slot, they should be rated “G.” To add a little more intention to the night you could create your own ballets and vote on the funniest clip.
To get everyone in the family engaged, I suggest a dance off. It may not purpose to be funny but every one of our dance parties guarantees loads of giggles as we make up ridiculous dance moves.
I hope you get to try this out and laugh till you cry.
