Golf Tips

Does this sound like you? Your setup position could be one of the causes of your lack of consistency.

Your set up position consists of the golf grip, posture, ball position and aiming. To hold the club correctly, you want to have the club lightly in your hands. You don’t need to squeeze the life out of it.

You want a neutral grip, seeing two knuckles in your glove hand. Posture is based on how you stand when you address the ball. Bending over too much or standing straight can affect your golf swing.

This can also affect where your center of gravity is, weight on your toes or heels. Ball position in your address can affect your posture and aiming. Having the ball too far forward or back in your stance can affect the aiming of your shoulders and hips.

Here at the TS&M Woodlawn Golf Club, we use the Kvest golf teaching technology, which consists of body sensors to measure positions in the golf swing.

These factors can lead to poor contact. A swing that is too steep can lead to hitting the ball too thin or too fat, or topping, slicing or hooking. A swing that is too flat can also cause problems with distance and direction.

Aiming is a big problem in golf, real versus actual.  People think they are aiming at a target and they are not even close.

To help fix some of these issues, try using golf clubs for alignment next time you go to the driving range. Visual aids can help tremendously with aiming and ball position.

Try setting up while facing a mirror and checking to see if you have a good posture and grip. For more help on your set up position, call the golf shop to book a lesson.
