Are you frustrated with your short game? Hitting short shots and watching your ball roll off the green?
Do you want to know how the pros on TV can make their ball stop quickly on the green when they are chipping and pitching within 60 yards? This happens with making solid contact with the ball and using the bounce on your wedge.
The bounce is the bottom of your club. You want to make sure that the bounce is the area on the club that is striking the ground. If you hit the ground with the bounce of the club, the leading edge will not dig and cause a fat shot.
To practice this, you must find the bottom of your swing, and take a few practice swings, brushing the grass without taking a divot. Make sure to accelerate through the hitting area, as acceleration causes backspin.
Another factor to hit these shots well is to hold the club face open through impact. A term I like to say is “hold the club face open to the sky.” For a right-handed golfer, keep a firm left wrist while hitting the shot. You can practice this technique by using an elastic and a popsicle stick.
Place the popsicle stick on your wrist and secure it with the elastic. This is a great way to keep the club face open and not flip your wrists.
Here at the TS&M Woodlawn Golf Club, we have a great short game practice facility. We offer lessons where golfers can learn and apply these techniques so that your golf ball will stop like the pros.
