Hit the slopes

From time to time, I like to highlight attractions in the southeast that make for great family days.

From time to time, I like to highlight attractions in the southeast that make for great family days.

Even though I’ve lived here for almost 15 years, I still feel like I don’t know the area that super well, as we tend to always travel during any extended time we have off. I hope that newcomers to the area, as well as long-time residents, can be reminded of the great things we have in our corner of the province and take advantage of them.

We are entering birthday month in our family, and we have a tradition to do a little family birthday weekend getaway. Due to our intense schedule coming up, we squeezed this tradition in last weekend with a trip to Regina. We tackled Chuck E. Cheese, stayed in a hotel, did the water slides, ate good food and then took the kids to Mission Ridge Winter Park for their first time skiing.

We’ve been wanting to take the kids skiing for the last couple of years, but ran into the dilemma of not knowing if they’d enjoy it, and not wanting to spend a ton of money on something that they may not enjoy. This year I put the work in to doing a lot of price comparisons for hills in the area.

We quite enjoy Asessippi in Manitoba but the drive felt a bit much. If you do want to go there with kids, try and hit up a Snow Sample Sunday where they give a discount for kids wanting to try out skiing.

I found Mission Ridge also had a promotion for Sundays that consisted of lift passes, rentals and a lesson for a family of four for about half off the regular price. It is a great deal. Due to the beautiful weather the hill was busy but the staff makes the entire park run super efficiently.

The kids learned a lot in their lesson and had a blast on the big hill. We spent a glorious seven hours skiing as a family and I’m so glad we went.
