If you're reading this on Friday, Dec. 21, then clearly the world hasn't ended. If the world is in fact ending and you still made the time to read my weekly column, then thanks. I appreciate you.
I have a university professor from Guatamala who swears the Mayans didn't predict the end of the world. He says their calendar just ran out, similar to how ours does every December. A new era is beginning and it's something to be celebrated instead of feared.
So I'm confident I'm still going to have to work on Saturday, which is fine with me.
However, I'm going to briefly entertain the idea that the world will end this week. And I'm writing a short list of the things I would do when facing the end of the world.
1) Eat all the chocolate I want. There's nothing wrong with gaining a few pounds or getting a cavity when you know you won't be living past Friday. So I'll just abandon the will power I usually exercise when tempted by my favourite sweet treats and indulge. Might as well die happily, if not a little bit heavier.
2) Spend all the money I have and run up my Visa. I was just going to say "spend all my money" but I don't really have that much cash kicking around and my credit limit is decent. So I'd buy all the things I've been waiting to purchase, and enjoy them like crazy in the time I have.
3) Go to work. That's right people, I'd still be getting out of bed and heading to my job. It's not that I'm absolutely in love with what I do, but I believe that delivering the news is important. Despite what people are saying following the coverage of the school shooting in Connecticut, the media is important. If you want to know what's going on in the world, want to educate yourself on current events, then you pay attention to the media. If you choose not to know and remain ignorant, that's not for a lack of information available. So I'd be getting out of bed to do my part educating the masses.
4) Open my Christmas gifts. I don't think I could go to the grave not knowing what Santa has in store for me this year. I've been extra well-behaved in 2012, so I'm crossing my fingers the gifts under the tree will reflect that.
5) Speak with everyone I love. Maybe that's a little mushy and lame, but I'd definitely like to say good-bye to those I care about. I'm of the religious belief that I wouldn't be seeing them ever again and I think it would be important to let everyone know that they're loved and will be missed.
So yes, it would be a busy week for me. Thankfully, the world won't be ending this week. I'm pretty sure, anyway. To be safe, I'll eat more chocolate than normal when I visit Estevan Wednesday to Friday. I'll spend money stupidly (not unusual). I'll do housework, maybe, since I'm off those three days. And I'll remind friends and family that I care for them.
