Light challenge

I fully enjoy our Twinkle Tour every year and appreciate the effort families put into decorating the exterior of their home for the holidays.

We started to notice that we didn’t really get to enjoy much of our front of house decorations and lights, because we rarely hang out on our front yard at night and so we also started decorating our backyard as well.

This year we totally decorated the kids’ playhouse and it is the perfect little Santa’s Toy Shop that we can see as we sit in the kitchen every night for supper. We also have the area around the hot tub decorated so we can enjoy festive lights while soaking. I love our backyard lighting tradition.

It got me thinking about what other areas we could decorate and have a little friendly competition. I don’t want my young kids climbing ladders and dealing with hanging lights on the house, but I figured it might be fun to have a Christmas lights competition indoors.

The first thing that comes to mind is that electrical outlets are a lot more accessible indoors so that’s a big plus. I also don’t want to spend a ton of money on extra lights but I’m thinking that maybe a competition like this would be a good way to make use of those half-working strings that I usually recycle.  It would for sure force us to get creative.

I also have so many sets of tree lights because I have so many trees. Some years I want white lights, some I want multi-coloured, and on my pink Christmas tree only pink lights work, so there’s lots of extra lights kicking around.

The idea is really simple and wouldn’t involve a whole ton of prep. Gather some lights and washi tape (because it doesn’t peel paint), divide the family into teams and assign a room.

Throw on some Christmas music and get creative making a holiday light display indoors. You might gussy up bunkbeds, frame windows or create a light up Rudolph on the wall. It’s sure to be a fun and festive way to spend the night.
