We love to travel during the summer and even though I’m a photographer by trade, I often find it hard to take a lot of pictures during our adventures, because I don’t want to lug my big camera around, and I want to be present in our adventures and not just capturing them.

Thankfully, smart phones have made snapping the odd picture much simpler and more convenient. As with anything in life, I find that if I have intention behind it, the process is smoother and I am so much more successful.

I have started to learn that I can set myself up for success in capturing our travel memories in creative ways.

One thing I like to do is to grab a couple of postcards from each location we visit. They are often sold two for a dollar and are sold in so many places if you keep your eyes open.

While we’re sitting down for a meal, I’ll ask my family what some of their favourite parts of our day have been, and I’ll jot down the memories on the back of the postcard.

We have a little magnetic board in our vintage camper Elsie where postcards go, and after a while they are transferred to a ring that’s hole punched in the corner.

Another easy way to keep track of a vacation is using Instagram and hashtags. Every year we spend the good part of a week in Bismarck, N.D., and have created traditions out of many activities.

I use the hashtag #willmsinthebis on each picture. Then when I want to look through pics of the vacation all I have to do is filter for that hashtag. I can also use various apps to filter the hashtag and create an album of just those pictures.

It takes less than five minutes to create and I get a custom photo book sent to me. We also like to do silly things like include a lego mini fig somewhere in every picture we take.

I hope you have a blast in all your summer travels.
