WEYBURN – The rich tapestry of cultures that call Weyburn and southeast Saskatcheawn home will be on display as Southeast Advocates presents the second annual Taste of the Nations event slated for October.
The festival, which serves as a celebration of food, music and tradition, will be at McKenna Hall.
“We have dishes and cultures being shared from around 15 different nations this year,” said Shannon Fodchuk, deputy executive director of Southeast Advocates.
Cultures represented includes the Philippines, India, China, Ukraine, Nepal, Nigeria, South Africa, Vietnam, Colombia, as well as Canada, and the Métis culture.
The food is authentic, said Fodchuk.
“The food is being prepared by local community members, newcomers and volunteers from each cultural group. They are excited to share authentic recipes from their home countries.”
But Taste of the Nations offers more than just a meal, said Fodchuk.
“Along with the food, there will be cultural performances, music and traditional dances. We also have a kids’ area to keep children entertained with tote bag making and Henna.
“We hold this event to celebrate diversity, showcase the many cultures in our community, and make sure newcomers feel welcome in our beautiful city,” she added. “It’s also a way to bring people together, build connections, and support the programs and services Southeast Advocates offers.”
They can accommodate up to 200 guests at the venue, so tickets are limited.
Tickets are on sale now for the Oct. 3 event. They are available now for $25. You can buy tickets at Southeast Advocates Office, located at 112 - 2nd Street, or by calling 306-842-9081, or emailing [email protected].
