WEYBURN — The Weyburn Humane Society has announced the groundbreaking of a brand-new animal shelter designed to provide a safe, welcoming and compassionate space for homeless and neglected animals in the community.
After many years of fundraising and donations to a building fund by dedicated volunteers, sponsors, businesses and contractors, past and present board members, memorial and estate charitable bequests, and a generous, caring community, a new shelter is now becoming a reality.
The shelter will be located at 1810 East Avenue. The first phase is the post-frame dog run building, 4,200 square feet (50 feet wide by 86 feet long), which will accommodate 16 dogs in separate kennels. This building will be an unheated outdoor space for nicer days. The contract has been awarded to Wood Country Building Services from McLean, with construction to be completed this fall.
The second phase will be the main building, 4,300 square feet (84 feet wide by 50 feet long), separate from the dog run building. It will include indoor dog kennels, a dog wash area, cat rooms with a playroom, storage, laundry, two washrooms, administration, a meeting room and a garage. There will also be a space for outdoor cat runs. This phase will be constructed over the winter and spring months, with completion expected in summer or fall 2026. The shelter’s design prioritizes animal health, sustainability and a welcoming experience for adopters and visitors.
The Weyburn Humane Society has had strong support in getting this project off the ground. Special mention goes to Kevin Melle and Mel Van Betuw, project co-ordinators, and Brandon Schatz, P.Eng., at Dimension Design and Consulting. The Humane Society said it could not have done it without their guidance, knowledge and expertise.
This new shelter is not just a building — it is a promise to the community’s animals that they will be cared for, protected and loved as they wait to find their forever homes, the shelter said.
The Humane Society says it is creating a space where hope begins for every pet who comes through its doors.
