Weyburn’s first mural of the year unveiled

The vibrant new artwork was designed by local artist Krystal.

WEYBURN – The Weyburn Art Gallery and Weyburn Arts Council have announced the completion of the city’s first mural of the year, calling it “fantastic.”

The vibrant new artwork, designed by local artist Krystal Glowatski, owner of Collaborative Studios, was selected as one of the winning designs in a public voting. The contest ran last year.

“We had over 75 designs submitted by locals,” said Regan Lanning Curator/ Arts Coordinator | City of Weyburn. “ That massive number was whittled down via a closed voting process amongst local arts organizations and city staff.  We just thought that 75 plus designs was overwhelming to take to the public. Once we had the designs cut down to 15, we took the voting public. Weyburn residents voted for our top three designs.”

There were three winners, and they were all announced last year; Krystal Glowatski, Delanie Castle, and Leena Honig.

“Delanie's mural is being completed this week, and Leena's will be painted next summer as it is very detailed and intricate,” said Lanning.

Currently, murals are being painted in Jubilee Park by the Weyburn Arts Council.

“This program, which is a multi-year initiative, began in 2022 and utilized existing recreation infrastructure (dugouts) to create one of a kind, hand painted, art works,” said Lanning.

After the competition of this last mural, they will only have three dugouts left to paint, which they hope to paint next summer with the public's help.

“After that, we will turn our eyes to other mural opportunities around the city,” said Lanning.

The Weyburn Art Gallery is located inside the Credit Union Spark Centre at 540 – 5th St. NE and fosters creativity and engagement.
