Assiniboia students will be back in class Sept. 2.

ASSINIBOIA — While school staff and teachers have been back since the end of August, the first day for students at Assiniboia schools will be right after the long weekend, starting Sept. 2.

With a couple of weeks of summer break left, it is important families start preparing their students for the return to classes with both practical steps and mental preparations. Key areas may include getting back to healthy sleep schedules and organizing school supplies. If children have moved up to a new school for the fall, it is important to discuss any concerns and questions they may have to help ease potential anxieties.

Some parents attest that a master household calendar with important school dates and activities helps keep everyone organized.

Teachers will be preparing for classes before students return, as well as holding staff meetings to communicate their school’s goals.

At Assiniboia Elementary School, the Grade 5/6 classroom will welcome Shevonne Campbell back from maternity leave. Jackie Pituley is transferring from 7th Ave. School, taking over the Grade 5 homeroom. Lana Wilson is joining AES after transferring from Lafleche as a student support teacher.

Brett Tiffin will take over as principal at Assiniboia Composite High School following the retirement of longtime principal Brent Chadwick.

The whole division is moving to a new reporting program called Edsby. This will offer parents and students quick access to marks through an app as well as an improved way to communicate with the school. Teachers will be learning the program as well, but will also be there to support families.

Prairie South School Division held an orientation day Aug. 21, welcoming new teachers to the division with a positive post and photo on social media.

The PSSD also held a First Rider Program at Assiniboia 7th Ave. School on Aug. 20 for students who are new to school or to riding the bus. The event included meeting transportation staff, learning about bus safety and taking a ride on a school bus.

Families can follow PSSD or Assiniboia schools on social media to stay updated as the school year begins.
