High school football provincial semifinals set to take place this weekend

Teams from throughout province playing for spot in SHSAA championship finals

The Central Cyclones will face Saskatoon Bishop Mahoney in the 5A 12-Aside provincial semifinal on Saturday in Saskatoon.

MOOSEJAWTODAY.COM -- The penultimate weekend of the Saskatchewan High Schools Athletic Association football season is only a couple of days away.

Teams from throughout the province will take the field in the provincial semifinals, with winners advancing to the SHSAA championship games during the Nov. 9 weekend.

Each of the semifinals from 1A Six-Aside through the 5A 12-aside division will take place on Saturday at 1 p.m.

In the 1A Six-Aside division, the Hafford Vikings will look to continue the quest for their sixth-straight provincial title when they take on the Lemberg North Valley Eagles in Lemberg. Hafford advanced to the semifinal with an 84-6 win over Big River, while Lemberg defeated Carrot River 38-26.

The other semifinal will see the St. Brieux Crusaders take on the Hanley Sabres in Hanley. St. Brieux advanced with a 58-14 win over Kerrobert, Hanley edged Plenty 30-28 in their quarter-final. 

The defending champion Clavet Cougars will aim to continue their run in the 2A Six-Aside division when they take on the Rosetown Royals in Rosetown. The Cougars advanced with a 60-21 win over Wynyard, Rosetown downed Creighton 62-12.

The Wakaw Warriors took a 66-53 win over Unity to advance to the other semifinal, with the Southey Screaming Eagles taking a 42-33 victory over Watrous to win their quarter-final. The teams will meet in Wakaw.

Two crews that put up commanding victories in their respective Conference finals will meet in the Nine-Aside semifinals. The Lumsden Devils defeated Humboldt 59-7 while the Melfort Comets took a 98-24 win over the Fort Qu’Appelle Bison, with the teams now playing their semifinal in Melfort.

Things were far closer on the other side of the draw where the Delisle Rebels downed the Shaunavon 29-25 and the Tisdale Tornadoes defeated Melville 35-20. The Rebels and Tornadoes will play their semifinal in Tisdale.

The 5A 12-Aside division saw Bishop Mahoney defeat Aden Bowman 42-6 in the Saskatoon league 5A final, advancing to the semifinal where they’ll meet the Moose Jaw Central Cyclones, who took a 32-7 win over Balgonie Greenall in the South Rural Football League final. That contest is 1 p.m. in Saskatoon.

The F.W. Johnson Wildcats defeated Thom Collegiate 44-3 in the Regina 5A city final, and they’ll face the Prince Albert Carlton Crusaders after the Crusaders won the North Saskatchewan League title 40-22 over Martensville. That semifinal will be at Max Clunie Field in Prince Albert.

The 6A 12-Aside provincial finalists will be decided Friday night in Regina and Saskatoon.

In Saskatoon, the Holy Cross Crusaders defeated Centennial 45-14 in one semifinal while the Saskatoon St. Joseph Guardians downed Walter Murray 44-6. The 6A city final will take place on Friday night at 6:30 p.m.

In Regina, the Campbell Tartans defeated Rifflel 27-22 white the LeBoldus Golden Suns edged Miller 17-12 to book their respective city final berths. That title game is set for 6 p.m. Friday at Mosaic Stadium.
