Saskatoon picks up 14-6 win over Fort McMurray, Moose Jaw defeats Weyburn 6-4, Medicine Hat take 9-6 win in Regina

SASKATOON -- It’s safe to say it was a pretty decent return to the line-up for Saskatoon Berries standout Carter Beck.

The Carnduff product and reigning Western Canadian Baseball League rookie of the year scored four runs in his season debut on Wednesday night at Cairns Field as the Berries took a 14-6 win over the Fort McMurray Giants.

In other action, the Moose Jaw Miller Express picked up their second-straight win with a 6-4 victory over the Weyburn Beavers and the Medicine Hat Mavericks downed the Regina Red Sox 9-6.

Saskatoon 14, Fort McMurray 6

The Berries scored five runs in the second inning and seven in the fourth on the way to their commanding victory and fifth-straight win.

Beck finished his night 2-for-5 with a triple and four runs scored to lead Saskatoon, while Mason Roell was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two runs batted in. aCorey Wouters and Bailyn Sorensen also scored two runs each.

Elijah Olaybal went 3-for-4 with a double, run and RBI to pace the Giants offence.

Marek Yeager earned the win on the mound, allowing four runs on seven hits over five innings and striking out six. Five pitchers saw action in relief.

Fort McMurray started Chaeun Yu got only two outs in the first inning before giving way to five relievers the rest of the way.

Saskatoon is now 5-1, Fort McMurray falls to 0-5.

Saskatoon is back in action Thursday in Moose Jaw at 7 p.m.

Moose Jaw 6, Weyburn 4

A pair of runs in each of the fifth and six innings were the difference as Moose Jaw took their narrow win in Weyburn.

Will Edwards ran his hit streak to five games for the Express, going 3-for-4 with a double, run and RBI. Tanner DeGrazia also went 3-for-4 and scored a run, while Austin Gurney had a double and knocked in a pair.

Ian Heck led Weyburn with a 3-for-4 night.

Westin Walls had a decent start on the mound for Moose Jaw, allowing no runs on only two hits while striking out five over four innings. Jordan Bauer earned the win in relief, Christian Garcia picked up the save.

Heck allowed four runs on eight hits over five innings and struck out in his start for Weyburn, Ethan Webster went the rest of the way and gave up two runs on six hits with six strikeouts.

Both Moose Jaw and Weyburn are now 2-3 on the campaign.

Weyburn next hosts Fort McMurray Thursday at 7:05 p.m.

Medicine Hat 9, Regina 6

After Regina roared out to a 5-0 lead through five innings, the Mavericks would score four in the sixth, tie the game in the eighth and then put up four runs in the extra inning.

The Red Sox had only three hits on the night, but one of them was a big one: a two run home run off the bat of Brady Bye in the second inning. Regina was also aided by six walks on the night.

Tyler Vanneste was 4-for-4 for the Mavericks, Jaden Babiuk 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI, Jeremy Freeman Jr. 4-for-5 with three RBI. Aaron Vulcano added a solo home run.

Luis Diaz picked up the win on the mound, taking over in the fifth inning from Tyler Spruiell and giving up only two hits in 4 ⅔ innings work.

Blake Johnson scattered six hits and struck out six in five innings of work for Regina, Ty Fortin gave up five runs -- one earned over the next two innings and Ayden Page allowed a single unearned run in the ninth.

Regina returns to the field Thursday in Swift Current at 7:05 p.m.

Other results Wednesday saw Lethbridge down Swift Current 3-2, Okotoks defeat Sylvan Lake 8-5 and Brooks down Energy City 6-3.
