At South East Eyecare, everyday is different. As a clinic that has two sides, eye examinations and a dispensary, the doctors’ days are never dull. “There is always a different problem to solve, a different person to help, and a new thing to learn,” said Dr. Sarah Silva, the optometrist at South East Eyecare.

With each new patient and problem comes a new lesson, Dr. Silva explained. She added that the two sides of the business enable her clinic to have the opportunity to “see it through” with each patient. The eye exam portion of the business may include everything from your typical routine eye examination to diabetic eye examinations to the treatment of eye injuries and disease “and everything in between,” added Dr. Silva. In addition to the typical eye exams, South East Eyecare is also involved in the pre-operative and post-operative care for laser surgery. The dispensary includes prescription glasses, sunglasses, and contact lenses.

“We enjoy ensuring that patients are receiving quality products that will meet their visual needs,” she said. With the two-pronged business approach, Dr. Silva is able to oversee that standard is applied to each and every patient.

Having opened the clinic in 2011, Dr. Silva has seen her business grow along with the community. As an active proponent of eye health care in Estevan, she encourages routine eye examinations. She cautions even those with 20/20 vision that eye exams can be the window into other bodily issues. “Stroke, diabetes, and many other diseases can cause changes in your eyes,” she explained. “Sometimes, because the blood vessels in the eye are so small, the changes happen in your eyes before they are detected anywhere else in the body!”

The staff and doctors behind South East Eyecare are as humble as they are talented. They say the true gratification comes from knowing they are helping people in the community. “Knowing that we play a small part in keeping our community healthy and helping our children learn is its own reward,” Dr. Silva said.
