2010 sports highlights in The Review

2010 opened amid the excitement of the Olympic Games in Vancouver. Yorkton, like other centres across the country was caught up in the excitement leading up to the Olympics.

2010 opened amid the excitement of the Olympic Games in Vancouver. Yorkton, like other centres across the country was caught up in the excitement leading up to the Olympics. The city hosted numerous events including the premier Olympic Torch Run Relay which saw the torch carried through Yorkton by prominent local and area persons as part of its travels around Canada.

Local resident Barry Sharpe carried the torch on its final leg through the city to light the Olympic flame at the Yorkton Exhibition Grounds.

Our Yorkton Terriers had fallen on hard times on the ice. It appeared the team would not make the playoffs for the first time in many years. The management board took a drastic step to try to turn things around. In a move that surprised the Terrier faithful, the board elected to relieve head coach Ed Zawatsky of his duties and named assistant coach Trent Cassan as interim head coach.

Sacred Heart High School (SHHS) brought in the Harlem Clowns basketball team to entertain local fans with a display of highly developed basketball skills and a good dose of humor.

The Yorkton Terriers annual Sportsman's Dinner featured Bobby Hull as keynote speaker. The Golden Jet kept the crowd entertained with his performance at the podium and gave hockey fans the opportunity to meet the legend personally.

The Yorkton Sports Hall of Fame announced the 2010 nominees at a luncheon at the Gallagher Centre. Alfredo Bermudez, Darrell Spelay, Rod Merritt and Terry Struthers were named for induction into the hall of fame.

Local curler Gerald Shymko and his mixed team of skip Shymko, third Dolores Syrota, second Raymond Nabe and lead Sharon Ripa advanced to the provincial mixed playdowns.

An apparently rejuvenated Terrier team appeared to thrive under the leadership of interim head coach Trent Cassan as they surprised almost everyone with their stellar playoff performance. The Terriers upset the favorites, Weyburn Red Wings by dumping them four games to one to advance to the Sherwood Conference finals against the high flying Kindersley Klippers.

The Yorkton Regional High School (YRHS) mixed curling team of skip Jayden Shwaga, third Matriciai Shwaga, second Kelly Somogyi and lead Dina Lazurko, coached by YRHS teacher Larry Folk, won a provincial high school bronze medal.

The annual YESSA city basketball championship went to the St. Paul's Patriots girls' team who claimed the title with a win over the runners-up from M.C. Knoll Knights. The St. Alphonsus Angels boys' team claimed the city wide boys' title with a win over runners up St. Paul's Patriots.

Local baseball umpire Craig Smith was selected to officiate at the Canadian Peewee Baseball Championships in Brandon Manitoba. Smith, a former catcher, says the job of umpire keeps him involved in the game he continues to enjoy.

Those upstart Terriers who were supposed to be out of the playoffs earlier managed to rally to win the Sherwood Conference pennant over the Kindersley Kippers in seven games.

Rider Pride Week in Yorkton saw a host of activities culminating with Football Night in Saskatchewan and the Rider 'Paride'. Visitors to the city included Rider personalities CEO Jim Hopson, George Reed, Weston Dressler, Stu Foord, Troy Westwood, Gene Makowsky and local football legend Jordan Matechuk.

The YRHS archery team claimed the team title as the top shooting high school team at the NASP Canadian Nation-al Championships, topping teams from Saskatchewan, Alberta, B.C. and Nova Scotia.

Local archer Dina Lazurko captured the Canadian High School Girls' National NASP title with a score 267 points out of a possible 300 points.

Yorkton Minor Baseball hosted the provincial AA Bantam Baseball Championships at Yorkton's hotbed of baseball, Jubilee Park.

Brayden Jarvis, an 11 year-old sixth grader who' been involved in archery six age six, placed fifth at the NASP World Championships. Jarvis became the NASP Canadian National Boys' Champion, shooting a score of 278 out of a possible 300 points.

The Yorkton United Dynamite U16 girls won the provincial division 2 title in Weyburn after a dramatic overtime shootout over Saskatoon Hollandia.

YRHS hoopsters Ben Redl and Daniel Mandziuk joined Team Saskatchewan for the Canadian Basketball under 15 nationals in Winnipeg.

Provincial runners-up the Alexanders Men's Wear Junior Cardinals, stepped in to compete at the Canadian Junior Baseball Championships at Trois Rivieres, Quebec when the provincial title holders Raymore Rockets declined.

Local Taekwondo athlete and official Susanne Mitchell was presented with The Best Referee Award at the CMATC World Military Taekwondo Championships held in St. Jean Richeloux, Quebec.

The Alexanders Men's Wear Junior Cardinals claimed the South East Senior Baseball League championship, sweeping runners-up the Willow-brook Royals 3-0 in the best of five game series. Junior Cards pitcher, Logan Calanchie, pitched the entire final game for the 5-2 win which clinched the title.

The YRHS cross country team, which sent 10 runners to the provincial championships, claimed the provincial team championship.

YRHS long distance runner Avery Westberg caps a nearly perfect season with five gold medals when she won the junior women's class at the Age Class Provincials in Saskatoon with a time of 18:00.2.

The Yorkton Peewee Gridders, in only their second season in the Regina Football League, managed to host the first home playoff game since 1993.

The SHHS boys' soccer team became provincial 2A champions for the second time in four years with an exciting final win against runner-up Evan Hardy Collegiate of Saskatoon. The SHHS Saints posted the final match 2-1 win after double overtime to claim the provincial title.

The SHHS Grade 9 Lady Saints captured the East Central District Championship for the second consecutive year with a win in two games over runners-up Norquay School.

The SHHS Senior Saints football team completed the best season in a long time, hosting a pair of playoff games at home before falling to defending provincial champions the Delisle Rebels in the semi-final.

Yorkton Peewee Gridders head coach Jason Farrell was short listed as one of 10 coaches in the country for the Home Depot/NFL Coach of the Year Award.

The M.C. Knoll Knights girls' volleyball team completed a perfect undefeated season by winning the YESSA Yorkton city championship over runners up Yorkdale Royals.

The Yorkdale Royals boys' volleyball team captured the YESSA citywide title with a win over runners-up, M.C. Knoll Knights.
