A new partnership between government and the city will help to ensure seniors in this area do not go without affordable housing.
On Thursday a sod turning event took place to mark the beginning of construction of a new senior housing complex at Allan Bay in Yorkton.
The initiative is as a result of a partnership between the Yorkton Housing Corporation, the City of Yorkton, the government of Saskatchewan and the federal government.
"This project will provide 22 additional units of quality, affordable and safe housing for low income seniors in Yorkton," spoke Yorkton/Melville MP Garry Breitkreuz Thursday. "This will allow them to remain in the community, close to family, friends and support networks. This is great news for those who need a hand up and for Yorkton itself."
Providing additional rental options to local seniors will also open up the housing market for others he adds.
The project received $2.4 million in funding through Canada's Economic Action Plan, the federal government's plan to stimulate the economy and create jobs during the global recession.
"This project is a result of many people coming together to make something positive happen," added Yorkton MLA Greg Ottenbreit at Thursday's event.
"We must continue to work together to support Saskatchewan's growing population and to ensure that housing is accessible for all people... this initiative also supports the Saskatchewan advantage that people have been hearing about, which is to continue to make the province the best place to live, work and raise a family.
"Our goal is to put people first to help them secure their futures through affordable housing. The recent growth and prosperity story hasn't come without challenges, especially in housing, but I've always said I'd rather deal with the challenges of growth than the hardships of decline. Vacancy rates have fallen and the ne housing starts haven't kept pace with demand, making housing affordability and availability tight in many communities...
"We take this challenge very seriously..."
This does far more than create 22 additional units in Yorkton says Mayor James Wilson.
"As people from within Yorkton move into those 22 units it creates availability of additional housing... it creates an opportunity for families... it pays a dividend back to the shareholders, the people of the community of Yorkton." This is a big positive says Wilson, and the first step of much more to come.
It's anticipated the new facility will be ready to go January 1, 2012. Applications are now being accepted for those interested in calling the Allan Bay Manor home. Applicants must be 60 years of age and older and income is not to exceed $44,500. Rent is $577 per month and includes heat, power and water.
