Women have come a long way over the centuries. It wasn't until 1916 that they even began winning the right to vote in Canada let alone to establish a career of their choice and to climb the ladder of success alongside men across the nation.
Today the sky is the limit and it's even more evidenced by the recognition that's coming their way.
The Government of Saskatchewan has officially declared September 14, 2011, as Canadian Federation of University Women Day in Saskatchewan.
The Canadian Federation of University Women (CFUW) is an equality-seeking, advocacy organization that works to advance the human rights of women and girls in Canada and they have made a difference. The CFUW is a voluntary, non-profit organization comprised of almost 10,000 graduate women, students and associate members across Canada. There are more than 200 members in Saskatchewan.
"The CFUW supports women seeking post-secondary education by providing $20,000 in scholarships annually," Advanced Education, Employment and Immigration Minister Rob Norris commented earlier this week.
"Furthermore, they support many community events and initiatives. We're very pleased to announce September 14, 2011, as Canadian Federation of University Women Day in Saskatchewan."
"CFUW members in Saskatchewan are dedicated to improving access to education for women, and we support peace, justice, human rights and programs that improve the environment," CFUW Saskatchewan Regional Director Marlene Chatterson adds.
"Our members appreciate the Government's support, as demonstrated by declaring September 14 as Canadian Federation of University Women Day."
Hats off to these ladies and to the many more like them out there who refused to take "no" or "you can't" for an answer. Instead they forged ahead and helped to make this country what it is today - one of equal opportunity and freedom for all.
