It was an experience they won't soon forget.
Students and staff from the Sacred Heart High School recently returned from an educational European adventure that will likely remain in the minds and hearts for a long time to come.
Teachers took their students to discover the history of the Holocaust in Europe. A group of 38 students had the opportunity to explore Germany, Poland and the Czech Republic during the 2011 Easter vacation. This was Sacred Heart's fourth educational tour in as many years.
The ten-day tour included stops in Berlin, Warsaw, Krakow and Prague. While on tour, students experienced the history of the Holocaust through several guided tours of places like Auschwitz and the Warsaw Ghetto. In addition, students visited 13 special attractions, such as the Checkpoint Charlie Museum and Prague's Jewish Quarter.
Students prepared and fundraised for the tour for the past two years. "The community has been very supportive of our fundraising efforts," says teacher Melissa Moen, "Several students were able to fundraise the total cost of their trip. It is wonderful that finances need not be a barrier for families.
"This is an experience that the students won't soon forget. Learning about the atrocities of the holocaust was very powerful and emotional at times. This tour was not just a history lesson on location, it truly was an opportunity for students to become globally minded citizens."
