The week of April 10-16 has historically been named National Volunteer Week across Canada and now so too has it been in Yorkton.

Lisa Washington, Community Development Manager in a presentation to council Monday evening says annually 12.5 million Canadians dedicate their time to volunteer and to help out in their communities.

"Volunteers are on the front lines of all of our communities services - community health care, sports and recreation, heritage and arts, environmental protection and advocacy, disaster relief, international development, and volunteer firefighting - the list is endless," says Washington.

"The work of volunteers is essential to maintaining resilient communities at home and around the world."

National Volunteer Week pays tribute to, and encourages, these efforts.

This year represents the 68th year for the initiative as it started in 1943.

"It's Canada's largest celebration of volunteers, volunteerism and civic participation..."

This year's theme is Passion. Action. Impact.

"It is based on the individual volunteer super-heros across Canada who dedicate themselves to making their communities better - and Canada a great place to live."
