The Yorkton Atom Gridders hosted the visiting Regina Eskimos at Kinsmen Century Field Sunday. The Eskimos claimed a 26-0 win, handing the Atom Gridders their fourth loss of the season.
Atom Gridders head coach Steve Variyan points out that the Regina Eskimos are a good team which won their last three games. The Eskimos beat a team similar to Yorkton's 47-0 so holding them to 26-0 was a reasonable performance. "We would have liked to score some points and we almost did," he says.
Variyan admits the Yorkton Atoms came out a little flat in the first half. He says he wasn't very happy with what appeared to be a lackadaisical effort.
Regina scored on the very first play which may have disheartened York-ton's youngsters, Variyan suggests.
The Atom Gridders played very well in the second half. "It was basically 6-0 in the second half," Variyan points out. Yorkton came much more aggressively in the second half, he suggests. "There was a little more swarm tackling and not too many guys doing things on their own," he adds. Nolan Budz, Garion Miller, and Matthew Balysky all played and ran very hard, Variyan says. "For these kids at this stage of the game, I was really happy," he asserts.
The Atom Gridders next game will take place in Estevan against the hometown Coal Miners. "It sets the stage really well for us in Estevan. Neither team has won a game yet. It's our last game of the year. We play it in Estevan and we're all pretty excited and that's what we're looking forward to now. That's where it ends, Estevan," Variyan closes.
