Deer Park Municipal Golf Course hosted its annual Men's Club championship over the recent weekend. The event saw 31 golfers vying for the men's club title, down from previous years, says club president Cliff Tremblay.

The two day 36 hole stroke play tournament had a low gross champion and a low net champion, using the handicap system from throughout the men's nights, Tremblay reports.

While he admits some disappointment with the turnout, Tremblay says the event saw near perfect weather and those who did register had a good time. "There were no excuses for bad shots," he chuckles.

The men's club had an excellent year with over 60 two person teams registered for the club's regular match play, Tremblay reports. "We were probably averaging 90 to 100 golfers every Tuesday night," he estimates.

The Tuesday men's nights typically involved a round of golf followed by a dinner, he notes.

Registration costs were very reasonable. Men's club membership was $25 and $15 for the team championship. Golfers could sign up as a spare for $25.

The Deer Park Men's Club playoffs which began Tuesday will have eight flites.

The men's club raised over $13,000 at the Deer Park Men's Open Golf Tournament earlier this summer. The funds will be applied to course improvement projects, possibly starting this fall, says Tremblay.

Anyone who would like more information about the men's club or who might be interested in becoming a member should contact either Cliff Tremblay at 786-2213 or Darren Grindle at 786-5893.

Club members come out to have fun while playing golf. "We also have day jobs because we're not that great at golf," Tremblay jokes.

The 2011 Deer Park Men's Club champion is Brent Brown who turned in a first round of two under par 70 and a one under par 71 final round. "The course is in great shape and we were able to score on both days," Brown reports.

A former men's club champ two years ago, Brown says he was gunning for the title again this year. Despite all the money and acclaim that goes with the men's club title, Brown jests that the important thing to him was getting the champ's parking spot.
