Canola added to slate of events

Yorkton is fast becoming synonymous with canola, and as a result many producers have questions and a need to learn more about canola production. The Yorkton Exhibition Association and the Yorkton Chamber of Commerce recognize this, and are launching the inaugural two day Canola Expo as part of the annual Grain Miller's Harvest Showdown.

"Because the area has become such a canola crushing and canola producing region, we decided we should put down some kind of information expo on the canola industry, for the farmers, producers, and everyone involved," says Shaun Morin, GM for the Yorkton Exhibition Association.

The event will feature guest speakers from the industry in the mornings, and a number of different breakout sessions in the afternoons, covering a variety of topics. While the list of speakers has yet to be confirmed, Morin promises that the people involved will be some of the top people in the industry.

"We'll try to get as much information and people from the industry with the farmers as we can, and hopefully everybody will come out of here with more knowledge about what they're doing and how they're going to get there," Morin says.

The Canola Expo will run November 2 and 3, starting a day before the Harvest Showdown, which runs from November 3-6. Morin says the event begins one day earlier to avoid scheduling conflicts. He reminds, the Harvest Showdown itself will be packed with events as well.

While this is the first year for the Canola event, Morin hopes it will become a fixture of Harvest Showdown in future years.

"With the speed that the industry changes, we'll be able to keep everybody as up to date as possible about what is going to be happening in the future," Morin says.
