The Yorkton Cardinals closed out their WMBL?season on Tuesday night with a 2-1 victory over the Regina Red Sox.
The win improved the Cardinals record to 13-27. The squad finished fourth in the East Division and will not be in the playoffs.
Yorkton scored runs in the first and third inning to record the victory.
Kenny Kissell (1-2) picked up the win, going five innings and allowing five hits while striking out, you guessed it, five batters.
Jake Mitcheltree (5-3) was the losing pitcher for Regina.
Duncan McAlpine pitched the final two innings for Yorkton to record the save. McAlpine put an impressive finishing touch on the season by striking out the final six Red Sox batters.
The victory also marked the final game for Jordan Herbison, a long-time starter for the Cardinals.
Herbison applied the finishing touches to his four-year Yorkton Cardinal career by playing a new position, shortstop, in his final game.
Herbison equated himself well at the new spot by making a couple of fielding plays and recording a double at the plate. He would eventually come in to score a run.
Thomas McAlpine also pitched in with his 23 RBI of the year.
Despite the game being essentially meaningless, Herbison says that winning (and ending a four-game losing streak) was important.
"Not only to us but to the whole Yorkton community,"?Herbison says,
"These guys worked really hard all summer, and unfortunately, it didn't pay off for us."
