YORKTON TERRIER HEAD COACH Trent Cassan, a former Terrier winger, is one of three nominees for the SJHL Coach of the Year Award.

Yorkton Terriers head coach Trent Cassan has been named as one of three finalists for the SJHL Coach of the Year title.

Cassan, a former three year forward for the Terriers, playing both right and left wing, took over the reins of the struggling team near the end of last season, moving into the job from the assistant coach position. He turned the team around, taking it all the way to the league final before falling to the LaRonge Ice Wolves, something local pundits would definitely not have put their money on.

This year in his first full season as head coach, Cassan "has been nothing short of magnificent," says the SJHL ballot bio. He has taken a team that some thought would finish in the middle of the pack and led them to a Sherwood Conference regular-season title. Under Cassan's leadership, the Terriers won 34 games and are a threat to capture the Credit Union Cup this season.

His coaching style has been adopted by the players and as a result, the Terriers are once again a team to be reckoned with in the playoffs.

Responding to the announcement of his nomination, Cassan says, "It's certainly humbling to be selected by your peers. He suggests he's in pretty good company when compared to Bob Beatty of the LaRonge Ice Wolves and Dean Brockman of the Humboldt Broncos, both of whom he considers top coaches in the SJHL.
