The Christ the Teacher Catholic School Division held its annual track and field Meet at Kinsmen Century Field Monday. Despite the windy conditions, the day was almost ideal for the meet with warm, sunny weather, says meet co-coordinator Tricia Korczak.
The young track stars ages 10 to 14 years included sneaker, weepee, peewee, bantam and midget age classes, Korczak points out. A total of some 500 youngsters were involved in the event, she adds.
Schools with students participating in the meet include St. Alphonsus, St. Mary's, St. Michael's, St. Paul's, and St. Theodore Schools.
Track events include the 100 metre, 200 metre, and 400 metre sprints as well as 800 metre and 1,500 meter long distance races and relay races rounding out the races on the track.
Field events include a ball throw for younger competitors, shot put for the older age classes, long jump and high jump.
A participatory event which is part of the physical education program, participants qualified for the division wide meet at local school meets earlier in the season, says Korczak.
The bantam and midget age competitors who finish at the top at the division meet advance to the East Central District Meet.
Korczak expresses her appreciation to all the coaches, school staff, parents and the kids taking part in the track meet. "The kids make this day. Without them we wouldn't be at the track meet," Korczak closes.
