It's a fun afternoon for the whole family and it's fast approaching!
Why not celebrate Canada Day this year by venturing down to a "Good Old Fashioned Family Picnic" on July 1 at the Western Development Museum Grounds.
"Get ready for a fun afternoon that the entire family can enjoy! There will be hay rides, novelty booths, face painting, an inflatable bouncer and restored fire truck rides," says Carla Madsen from the WDM and Canada Day organizing committee.
"Kids of all ages can take part in games and relays, as well as go on a Canadian-themed treasure hunt to win some great loot! For the adults, new caches for the "Great Canadian GPS Quest" will be set up, plus vintage vehicle buffs will enjoy the display by the Yorkton Antique Auto Association."
Handcrafted decorative ceramics by local artist Sonya Pawliw will be displayed as well as artwork from students of the local high schools. Museum galleries will also be open for viewing (regular gallery admission applies) where visitors can see many exciting additions to the Winning the Prairie Gamble exhibit.
Opening Ceremonies begin at 12:30 p.m. with a special Colour Party entrance and the singing of "O Canada." Greetings from local dignitaries will be delivered and winners of the Canadian Colouring Contest will be announced.
"An incredible lineup of entertainment will keep the stage moving throughout the afternoon including a variety of dance and vocal performances. New this year will be dog shows by the Shamrock Kennel & Obedience Club, who also have some fun contests lined up just for our canine guests!"
Show your patriotism and creativity by entering the "Coolest Canadian Hat Contest" with categories for adults and kids under 18.
"Use your imagination and express true Canadian spirit to have a chance at winning some terrific prizes!"
The Yorkton Canada Day Committee will be handing out complimentary flags and pins, as well as serving free cake to help celebrate Canada's 145th birthday.
"Delicious picnic fare including hot dogs, hamburgers, curly fries, ice cream, and beverages will be available at concessions run by the Royal Canadian Army Cadets, M&M Meat Shops and Kalyna Ukrainian Dance, so bring your appetite too!
"We look forward to an exciting afternoon, so gather up the whole family and join us for some good old fashioned fun. Admission to the grounds is FREE!"
The upcoming event is sponsored by the Yorkton Canada Day Committee, the Western Development Museum, Tourism Yorkton, the City of Yorkton, and the Celebrate Canada Committee for Saskatchewan & Department of Canadian Heritage.
It takes place Sunday, July 1 from 12:00 to 4:00 p.m. at the Western Development Museum Grounds.
