The past year has been one of growth in the province, and 2011 looks to be continuing that trend. The Yorkton Chamber of Commerce is preparing for a busy 2011.

Juanita Polegi, manager of the Yorkton Chamber of Commerce, says that the mandate for the chamber will remain the same in 2011. The focus will be on examining issues and policies relevant to the Yorkton area, either supporting initiatives or providing input to see those programs improved.

In the next year, of the biggest events for Saskatchewan will be the upcoming provincial election. Polegi emphasizes that the Chamber of Commerce is not a political organization, and does not do anything along party lines, but it will host an all candidates forum close to the election day.

"It provides an opportunity for all of the candidates to be heard by the electors," Polegi says.

The Chamber has put its support behind the recent A Change Today For Your Tomorrow tax review. Polegi says the chamber supports the report in principle, as the goal is to keep the province competitive.

The Saskatchewan Chamber of Commerce will be focusing on improving education and training in the coming year, and Polegi says the Yorkton Chamber will also support local education efforts in the next year. She notes that the Chamber keeps in contact with the Parkland College and will be supporting their efforts to expand and improve programming.

Polegi says the many events that the Chamber holds throughout the year will continue, with the first chamber luncheon coming on January 21. The employee recognition event in May and the Chamber Dinner in September are also being planned.

She also says the Chamber of Commerce will spend the year working towards representing the members as best it can.

"It's a dynamic group of directors who bring to the table a lot of knowledge and experience. I think they will work very hard to ensure that the members are well represented in the community," Polegi concludes.
