In an effort to inform the public about both sides of the Canadian Wheat Board issue, the Yorkton Chamber of Commerce has announced it will be hosting a special debate, open to the public, the middle of next week.

The debate will focus on whether or not the Canadian Wheat Board should be allowed to maintain its monopoly for the marketing of Western Canadian grown non-feed wheat and barley.

Representing the Canadian Wheat Board (CWB) will be Kyle Korneychuk of Pelly. Korneychuk is the elected Director representing District 7 - the district in which Yorkton is located.

Representing the Western Canadian Wheat Growers Association (WCWGA) will be Geoffrey Hewson, an elected Director of the Association from Langbank.

Dolores Harris, President of the Yorkton Chamber of Commerce stresses that anyone with an interest is welcome to attend the Debate.

"The Yorkton Chamber of Commerce has chosen to remain neutral on the future of the Canadian Wheat Board," she says.

"However, the Chamber's Directors feel it is important for farmers and especially business people to understand both sides of the issue,"

Ron Irvine, Chairman of the Chamber's Public Policy committee adds. "Even though legislation has been introduced to end the CWB's monopoly on marketing, there is still time for people to understand the issue," he said. "We expect the debaters to clearly present their views enabling the audience to develop their own conclusions."

Questions from the audience will be taken if time permits. Members of the audience who wish to pose a question will be asked to write their question on an index card provided at the door. The Moderator will draw the written questions randomly and invite each debater to respond to the question. No oral questions will be taken from the floor.

The event will take place beginning at 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 26 at the Royal Canadian Legion Hall.
